Rice School of Architecture / Arch 101 / Fall 2011 / Nonya Grenader & Danny Samuels
This early project is situated in an unspecified north-facing 24’ x 24’ x 24’ infill lot in midtown Houston. The gallery, owned by Stella McCartney, would feature private exhibitions which would be primarily of interest to collectors. This proposal emphasizes a entralized light-filled pantheonic void, which defines a main axis of symmetry and allows visual connectivity between floors. The stair in the back is submerged in darkness in order to enrich the encounter with the light, spacious second floor. Large windows span the building on either side, providing views to a set of trees. The project is an exploration of the fundamental architectural concepts of form, light, and space. It also fostered the development of an important set of skills, including modelmaking and an understanding of architectural drawing.
